shinmai 2020 OVERTURE and it's "companion" piece 2020 OVERKILL perfectly bookend the year and exude the exact energies 2020 was putting out with disaster after disaster happening seeminly daily.
2020 OVERTURE is unapologetic, acoustically intriguing and goes through a lot of interesting motifs over the 7 and half minute runtime. I especially love the use of filters for very interesting textures and heavy sidechaining for an incredibly driving beat throughout.

Don't sleep on 2020 OVERKILL either!

about

Introducing 2020 OVERTURE, one of the fastest tracks I've made, going up to 800 BPM. It is my first speedcore and splittercore release!

As you could tell from the title and cover art, 2020 OVERTURE is about how calamitous the opening of 2020 was. From the threat of World War 3, Australia's huge bushfires, a coronavirus pandemic sending the world into lockdown and changing everyone's lives, Krakatoa erupting, earthquakes, floods, economic instability, and overall drama. It is such a wild time, so I made this wild tune to reflect it. It's also self expression; pent-up anger and stress from routine changes and moving house while working at home is present in this track.

I felt inspired, like many artists, to make music and artwork about these events. Unlike Black Swan and Island within an Island, which were made months ago and repurposed to symbolise the isolation caused by the coronavirus pandemic, 2020 OVERTURE WAS made during it, one of few tracks I made with a purpose in mind. It started on March 26, 2020, and finished on April 09, 2020.

2020 OVERTURE is meant to be a "historical bookmark", released during a global pandemic, and to be an artist's best way of depicting the uncertainty it caused in a musical way, as the event unfolds. That way, when people look back at what I released during a pandemic, they'll see I made a track all about it.

2020 OVERTURE symbolises the utter insanity of the year with hard-hitting beats and jarring synths swinging from 100 BPM to 800 BPM. It reflects the turbulence people are going through right now with facing unemployment, having to work / study from home, or even more challenging: having COVID-19, or being an essential / healthcare worker at the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.

I used different, harsh-hitting genres in some areas with different speeds to reflect this turbulance, like at the beginning it sounds like "hard trap music" (100 BPM), then it turns into Speedcore (400 BPM), then Splittercore (800 BPM), then melodic hardcore, then "hard trap music" again, then drum and bass (200 BPM), then splittercore, then "hard trap music", all with distorted drum hits and rapidfire synths and staccatos. I wouldn't call this dubstep though, there's not enough WUB WUB WUB for it to be considered dubstep!

An even faster sequel to this, called "2020 OVERKILL", was released on December 28, 2020. It goes all the way up to 2020 BPM: moule.bandcamp.com/track/2020-overkill

2020 OVERTURE is definitely not meant to be enjoyable for everyone. In fact, you might argue it's a terrible track for a terrible year, and I'd agree with you! I understand you may not like this track, but it sure was fun to make and I will not apologise for the deliberate harshness of this track!
